Gaiman's latest novel exhibits the same mastery of plot that has won him legions of fans since The Sandman series first appeared. Shadow, Gaiman's newest protagonist, after spending three years in prison, can't wait to get back to his wife -- and to stay out of trouble for the rest of his life. But days before his scheduled release, Shadow learns that his wife has been killed in a mysterious accident. On the plane ride home to the funeral, Shadow meets a grizzled man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A self-styled grifter and rogue, Wednesday offers Shadow a job. And Shadow, now a man with nothing to lose, accepts. But, of course, working for Wednesday turns out to be far more complicated than Shadow could have ever imagined. Quickly finding himself entangled in a dense web of secrets, he sets out on a wild road trip and encounters, among others, the murderous Czernobog, the impish Mr. Nancy, and the beautiful Easter -- all of whom seem to know more about Shadow than he himself does. Soon Shadow and Wednesday are swept up into a conflict as old as humanity itself -- a battle of gods from myth and the old world. At stake is the very soul of America. For Gaiman, this is definitely his most ambitious effort; for his readers, the wait was not in vain.
